WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) -- In the shadow of the nation's Capitol, where talks continued on Tuesday to try avoid the much-discussed fiscal cliff, several thousand people came together at the Upper Senate Park to add their voices to the discussion.

The rally was organized by several progressive political groups and labor unions. Speaker after speaker hammering home the same points: That fiscal cliff negotiations can not result in cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid, and that wealthy Americans should be forced to pay their fair share of taxes.

When the rally was finished, protestors marched to the offices of House Speaker John Boehner to deliver a bag of coal, an early Christmas present, they said, from the nation's poor and middle class.

"We believe Speaker Boehner has been far too naughty," one speaker intoned.
