Alameda, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Veteran cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha will
retire as a member of the Oakland Raiders, the team said Thursday.
Asomugha played his first eight NFL seasons for the Raiders and will announce
his retirement at their headquarters on Friday.
The three-time Pro Bowl corner was released Nov. 4 after playing just three
games for the San Francisco 49ers this season.
Asomugha, who married "Scandal" actress Kerry Washington in June, had signed a
one-year deal with the 49ers after two disappointing seasons as a starter with
the Philadelphia Eagles, who signed him to a five-year, $60 million deal as a
prized free agent in 2011.
That deal came after Asomugha made three straight Pro Bowls from 2008-10 with
the Raiders, building a reputation as one of the top corners in the league.
Asomugha, 32, registered 407 tackles and 15 interceptions in 11 NFL seasons
and played in at least 14 games in 10 of those seasons.
