WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- As for players, they found out about their head coach a variety of ways: from twitter and other social media, from TV reports and teammates when they got to Redskins Park.

Several players spent the day cleaning out their lockers while franchise Quarterback Robert Griffin, III signed autographs for teammates, just a couple of the ways to spend the last day at Redskins Park during the Mike Shanahan era.

His time with the burgundy and gold ended with a 3 and 13 season, their worst record since 1994. The last time they were winless in December was 1978. Now Shanahan's out and players, like it or not, understand why it happened.

Kedrick Golston says, "Things didn't work out. That's the tough thing about this business, whether its on the players side or the coache's side, it's a results business"

"I'm not sayin' talking about head coach being fired is a major distraction, but its some type of distraction to a football team, I don't care what you say. when you have 3 games left in the season and they make a move to start Kirk in only thing to talk about is firing a coach. We didn't want to hear that," says Darrell Young.

Ryan Kerrigan says, "None of these coaches played a down this year, its all on us. I mean we can complain all we want we liked this coaching staff we didn't want them to be fired, but it comes down to how we played on the field and if we would've played better we wouldn't be in this situation."

"Coach Shanahan taught me a lot in just two years of being with him and I want to thank him for drafting me to Washington Redskins and giving me chance to live out my dreams," says RGIII.
