RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Republican John Cosgrove has been sworn in as the newest member of the Virginia Senate.

Cosgrove won a seat in the Virginia Senate to replace retired Sen. Harry Blevins earlier this month in an uncontested special election with fewer than 3,000 votes cast.

Cosgrove has represented Chesapeake in the House of Delegates since 2002. He will finish the final two years of the term Blevins won in 2011.

Blevins served three years in the House and a dozen years in the Senate after that before retiring midway through his term, citing health concerns.

The Virginian-Pilot reports ( that Cosgrove was sworn in earlier this month with a few relatives watching.

Cosgrove's vacant House seat will be filled in November's election for all 100 Virginia House seats.
