ALEXANDRIA, Va (WUSA9) -- Lawyers for Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-Va), and lawyers for his wife Maureen, spent hours with federal prosecutors, trying to convince them not to file criminal charges against Virginia's first family.

The issue: $100,000's in swanky gifts and loans to the governor and his wife from Star Scientific, a nutritional supplements company -- clothes, golf clubs, a Rolex watch.

Governor McDonnell declined to talk about the meetings, as did his lawyers.

But the governor has insisted in the past that he did nothing for Star Scientific that he wouldn't have done for any Virginia company.

According to the Washington Post, the governor's side says his wife kept him in the dark about the gifts.

Jonnie Williams' lawyers have reportedly disputed that with prosecutor, insisting the governor was in close consultation with the head of Star Scientific.

Law enforcement sources tell the Post that prosecutors are in a hurry to wrap this up in the next few weeks, before the race to succeed McDonnell kicks into high gear after Labor Day.
