Fairfax County firefighters to hand out coats for kids

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA9) -- Fairfax County firefighters are handing out winter coats to kids in the annual "Firefighters Coats for Kids" giveaway.

The coats will be handed out to children through middle school age at Penn Daw Fire and Rescue Station 11, located at 6624 Hulvey Terrace in Alexandria on October 30 at 11 a.m.

Area preschool children will also receive new coats from firefighters. 

The firefighters are working with Operation Warm, Coats for Kids Foundation, Apple Federal Credit Union, Progressive Firefighters of Fairfax County, and Fairfax County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics.

More than 2,200 youths and their families are expected to benefit from the giveaway.

This is the first year that made in America coats have been featured in the annual giveaway and the seventh year the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department has sponsored this event.

The department coordinates distribution with Fairfax County Public Schools, the Department of Human Resources, Department of Family Services, and local shelters.

More than 60 fire departments are now participating in the annual coat giveaway throughout the country.
