Alejandra Valeri Espinoza-Velasquez charged; Doris Aucapina-Espinosa Dies in Va. crash

Alejandra Valeri Espinoza-Velasquez has been charged with two counts of felony child neglect, two counts of felony injure the health of a child, one count of reckless driving, and one count of failure to secure a child in a safety seat, officials said.

MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA9) -- One person is dead and multiple people are injured, including two children, after an SUV rolled off the road on Sunday, according to Prince William County police.

Police have identified the deceased as Doris Aucapina-Espinoza, 43, of Rockwood, New York. She was not wearing a seat belt and she was ejected from the car, officials said.

The driver, Alejandra Valeri Espinoza-Velasquez, 19, of Manassas, has been charged with two counts of felony child neglect, two counts of felony injure the health of a child, one count of reckless driving, and one count of failure to secure a child in a safety seat, officials said.

A total of nine people were in a 2004 Ford Explorer when the driver lost control, left the roadway and rolled multiple times before landing on its roof down an embankment, officials said.

It happened in the area of Dumfries Rd and Toddsbury Lane around 4:08 a.m. on Sunday.

The passengers included two children, one teenager and five adults.  Five of those occupants were not wearing seat belts, officials said. 

Four passengers were flown out for their injuries, and one of those passengers later died at the hospital.

Three other people were transported to an area hospital. The four-year-old boy sustained significant injuries. All other surviving occupants sustained non-life threatening injuries, officials said. 

Police say speed, alcohol, and drug use are not believed to be factors in the crash at this time. 

The driver was wearing a seat belt and was not injured during the collision. 

In addition to the driver and the deceased, the occupants of the vehicle included:

 

  • A 39 year old man of Woodbridge - was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected, flown out
  • A 49 year old man of Lindenhurst, NY - was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected, flown out
  • A 4 year old boy of Woodbridge - was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected, flown out
  • A 36 year old man of Brooklyn, NY - was not wearing a seatbelt and was injured, transported
  • A 38 year old woman of Woodbridge - was wearing a seatbelt and was injured, transported
  • A 6 year old boy of Woodbridge - was properly secured and was injured, transported 
  • A 17 year old male of Woodbridge - was wearing a seatbelt and was treated at the scene
