ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA) -- If math isn't your best subject maybe you should learn it the way some of the students at Hammond Middle School do over the summer, by building boats!

The 6th through 8th graders in the summer program are now experts at fractions, measuring, and boat building as well.

The Alexandria Seaport Foundation runs the workshop in conjunction with wood shop teacher Matt Cupples.

Students do everything from cutting the lumber, to caulking the joints and assembling the 14 foot row boat.

The final test of their math is when the put the boat they built into the Potomac River. And their maiden voyage had NO LEAKS!!!

By the way, every student The Alexandria Seaport Foundation helped after last years summer program, not only passed the boat building class, they also went on to pass their standard math course in the following school year as well! Pretty Cool!
