(WUSA9) -- Frederick County Sheriff's Office officials say a man stabbed himself after a car chase that ended in West Virginia.

Fifty-six-year-old James Poland of Frederick County was flown to a hospital after police say he used a knife to inflict wounds on himself at the end of a car chase.

On January 8 at approximately 1:26 a.m., police say they tried to pull Poland's vehicle over for a traffic infraction in the area of Martinsburg Pike near the I-81 intersection.

Poland fled onto I-81 northbound. Frederick County Sherriff's Office officials put spike strips at the 323 mile maker prior to entering West Virginia, according to police.

Poland drove over the strips and continued until the eight mile marker, where he lost control of the vehicle and hit a concrete barrier, officials said.

As West Virginia authorities approached the vehicle, they say Poland was using a knife to inflict wounds to himself.

Poland was removed from the vehicle were he received medical
attention and was flown to undisclosed hospital for treatment, officials said.

Warrants were obtained and are on file for speeding and felony eluding. Poland's current condition is unknown.
