AVENUE, Md. (WUSA9) -- St. Mary's County authorities say an officer was trapped inside his police cruiser after an accident involving a deer on Tuesday morning.

According to authorities, Sgt. Robert Russell was traveling north on Oakley Road near Banerjee Court on Dec. 31 at 7:15 a.m. when a deer entered the road. His car hit the deer, which lodged underneath the car after which the deer died. Sgt. Russell was unable to steer the car and it left the roadway.

The car then overtunred into a ditch filled with water and Sgt. Russell was trapped inside, say authorities.

Crews showed up and freed Sgt. Russell. He was taken to Medstar St. Mary's Hospital for an evaluation and released, say authorities.
