ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) --- Nourish Now doesn't allow healthy food go to waste. Instead, the non-profit organization serves to connect the extra food to people and families in need.

"We're working to achieve our mission of ending food waste and hunger as well," said founder and executive director, Brett Meyers.

Nourish Now collects donations of surplus food from area restaurants, caterers and other food providers. Since its inception in 2011, the organization has been able to donate over 135,000 pounds of food to those in need.

Currently, two area restaurants offer free meals: Not Your Average Joe's (Kentlands) and Quench restaurant (Rockville) host weekly dine-in meals for families in need.

Nourish Now builds relationships with services and organizations who have food to donate. The food is then prepared and packaged for families, at-risk youth, shelters, food banks and other places working to fight hunger. Additionally, volunteers cook healthy meals with the food donations.
