UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA9) -- A Metropolitan Police Department officer was sentenced Monday for domestic violence charges.
Capt. Lamar West was given a 10 year suspended sentence and 18 months of supervised probation after pleading guilty to second degree assault for strangling his wife, according to the Prince George's County State's Attorney office.
In September, 2012 West was riding in a car with his wife and two friends, when he and his wife got into a verbal altercation that eventually turned physical, according to officials.
Upon hearing the commotion, the driver pulled over, and the front seat passenger exited the vehicle and opened the rear passenger door in an attempt to assist the victim whom West was strangling at that time, officials say.
West's trial resulted in a hung jury and instead of a re-trial, West entered his guilty plea.
