SPRINGFIELD, Va. (WUSA9) -- A wintry mix impacting much of the Northeast is also going to send some snow showers our way. Some people are going to measure this in feet. Thankfully, that won't be us. We'll not get the brunt of the storm. We will probably get 1 to 3 inches depending where you are in relation to I-95.

Thursday morning, drivers were traveling on dry roads in the Mixing Bowl but we know it gets congested there so crews will be paying special attention to the roads as the temperatures drop and precipitation begins to fall later Thursday.

In the Boston area, snow plows are getting to work with an expected snowfall of a foot or more. New Yorkers are preparing for about 3 to 7 inches there. The governor is even warning drivers to leave their cars at home in case they need to shut down the highways completely.

In the Midwest, they've already been slammed with snow and bitter cold temperatures.  In Chicago, they broke a 96-year-old New Year's Day record with more than 5 inches of snow. More white stuff is coming their way. Another foot is expected Thursday.

Even though we're not expected to get a whole lot of accumulation like the Midwest, about 1 to 3 inches, we know it can still wreak havoc in the area and we can expect slick roads. Crews will be out working overtime pretreating the roads but drivers should proceed with caution as they're heading out for the evening commute when this precipitation begins to fall.

We're also hearing there could be some delays at the airport Friday so be prepared for that as well.
