SPRINGFIELD, Va. (WUSA9)  -- Witnesses say two cars may have been racing before one of the drivers died in a crash in Manassas on Wednesday night.

Police say they responded to the report of a crash on Wednesday shortly after 11 p.m. They say 30-year-old Brian Benjamin Blaine of Manassas was driving his 2001 Honda S2000 convertible southbound on the Franconia-Springfield Parkway, approaching Spring Village Drive.

According to police, witnesses reported that the Honda seemed to be racing a dark colored, newer model Infiniti. Both vehicles apparently passed each other several times, according to witness.

Police tell us Blaine lost control as the Honda left the curve just prior to Spring Village Drive.  The Honda went off the roadway to the right, struck an embankment and a tree. That impact redirected the car back onto the parkway before the Honda rolled over and came to rest, upright, in the southbound lanes of the parkway.

Police say the Honda and the Infiniti did not appear to make contact at any time.

Blaine was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital and was pronounced dead shortly before 8 a.m. on Thursday, according to police.

Police tell us that speed was a factor in this crash, but it is unknown at this time whether or not alcohol was a factor.

Police ask anyone with information about the crash or about the Infiniti to call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS/8477 or call Fairfax County Police at 703-691-2131.
