WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- George Washington University admits that financial need can come into play for admitting students who have been put on a waiting list, according to the school's student newspaper The GW Hatchet.

The university previously claimed it used a "need-blind" application process, meaning the applicant's financial status is not a factor in admission.

The university issued a statement that read in part:

"What has changed is the new leadership in enrollment management. What we are trying to do is increase the transparency of the admissions process."

The cost of attending George Washington University is roughly $60,000 per year.
