(WUSA9/USA TODAY) -- Wendy Hunsaker, a cancer survivor, threw off her hospital gown and put on a ball gown to celebrate her last day of treatment.

She says she got a great piece of advice from her sister-in-law who is also a cancer survivor. Her sister-in-law told her she wished she had celebrated at the end of her cancer treatment. "And that was all the encouragement that I needed," says Hunsaker.

Hunsaker says as she was driving home from radiation one day, "I thought, 'Wendy is trading in her hospital gown for an evening gown. I'm going to throw an extravaganza' and it just seemed like the right thing to do. I went straight to the invitation place and started planning a big party."

The event was black-tie. She had all of her friends come to her last radiation treatment in evening gowns.

Hunsaker says the biggest thing about going through treatment is that "you lose control over everything." She says it dominates everything you do in your life and you don't want it happening to you.

"You have to be careful because you can start feeling like a victim in that situation," says Hunsaker.

Hunsaker says her husband and her son "were my absolute rock and my cheerleaders. They were just, they were champs."
