Experts may soon be able to detect Alzheimer's before it starts

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- One day, it may be possible to stop Alzheimer's by tracking the condition before it develops.

A new discovery out of Spain shows clues to the potential development of Alzheimer's may be already be present in a person's body.

In the cerebral spinal fluid to be exact. This is the substance that surrounds the brain and the spinal cord.

The information shows the potential for Alzheimer's in a patient 10 years before the condition actually develops.  The brain disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States and affects over 5 million Americans.

The findings are published in the latest issue of Annals of Neurology.
