(WUSA9) -- New York Senator Chuck Schumer is pushing for all new cars to be built with rear view cameras. Schumer held a new conference Sunday, saying the cameras could help prevent deadly backover crashes.
"Back-over crashes occur when lovers, friends, neighbors put their cars in reverse and accidentally strike the person behind the car because of a blind spot," said Sen. Schumer.
Last month the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it will add rear view video systems to its list of recommended features under its new car assessment program.
Safety groups say the agency is dragging its feet in fulfilling a congressionally imposed deadline to issue a rule on rear visibility.
