1 (6) - Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB, LSU; 3 (68) - Leon McFadden, CB, San Diego State; 6 (175) - Jamoris Slaughter, S, Notre Dame; 7 (217) - Armonty Bryant, DE, East Central, OK; 7 (227) - Garrett Gilkey, OT, Chadron State

Top Picks Analysis: Mingo is a high-risk, high-reward edge pass rusher for the new defensive coordinator Ray Horton's 3-4, the classic boom-or-bust type who probably shouldn't have been in the conversation at No. 6 overall. McFadden is a small, quick-footed corner, best suited for the slot. He could also help in the return game.

Best Value Pick: Slaughter was playing well at Notre Dame last season until tearing his Achilles, an injury he is still rehabbing from. If healthy and that's a big if, Slaughter is the kind of versatile free safety who Horton can line up all over the field and be confident there will be no mental mistakes.

Questionable Calls: Taking Mingo so high will be questioned for years unless the former LSU star hits the ground running.

Summary: New general manger Mike Lombardi clearly wasn't thrilled with the talent in this draft and turned seven picks into five with an eye on 2014. The biggest surprise was the fact Cleveland didn't take a flyer on one of quarterback prospects late since no one in the new brain trust is all not enamored with Brandon Weeden. In the end, this draft all hinges on Mingo. It's pretty easy to understand Lombardi's philosophy with the pick. It's a pass- first league, and everyone needs an impactful presence off the edge. Mingo has the talent, it's now the Browns' job to make sure his motor doesn't run so hot and cold.
