Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Scott Wood led the way with 22 points as the
NC State Wolfpack outlasted the Virginia Tech Hokies in overtime, 90-87, in
an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at PNC Arena
For the Wolfpack (18-7, 7-5 ACC), five players joined Wood in double figures,
including C.J. Leslie (16 points), Lorenzo Brown (15), Tyler Lewis (13), T.J.
Warren (12) and Richard Howell (10 points). Howell also grabbed 16 rebounds,
and Brown handed out seven assists..
Erick Green scored a game-high 29 points and dished out eight assists to lead
Hokies (11-14, 2-10), while Jarell Eddie added 17 points and Marshall Wood
posted a double-double of his own with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
Virginia Tech took a 36-34 lead into halftime by shooting 47.1 percent from
the field in the opening 20 minutes while holding NC State to just 43.3
In the second half, the Wolfpack heated up, connecting on 52.4 percent of
their field goal tries, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range. The Hokies shot
43.2 percent from the field, including 6-of-13 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Trailing by seven with just under eight minutes to play, the Wolfpack ran off
14 unanswered points to go up seven with 3:45 remaining. Their lead was still
six, 76-70, with 31 seconds remaining before Virginia Tech mounted its
comeback. Shooting two free throws down 78-75 in the final seconds, Green made
the first but missed the second. Eddie grabbed the rebound and put back a
layup to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, the teams traded leads before the Wolfpack went ahead
for good with a 6-0 run in the final minute, all from the free-throw line, as
they pulled out the victory.
Virginia Tech had the edge in points in the paint, 36-30.
