ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA9) -- The 17-year-old driver involved in the fatal skateboarding accident has been charged with reckless driving, police say.

John Malvar, an 18-year-old student at Washington-Lee High School, was skateboarding on the 300 block of S. Highland Street while hanging on the vehicle's driver side window, the Arlington County Police Department said.

At some point, he lost his balance, fell and hit his head on the road. He was transported to George Washington University Hospital where he died due to his injures several hours later, police said.

"The 17 year-old driver appeared before a judge in Arlington County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court today and was formally charged with reckless driving," police said in a press release.

The teen was released to his parent's custody. A trial date has been set for August 8.
