(WUSA9) -- Police used cell phone records, Department of Motor Vehicle records and social media account photos to tie two men to smash and grab robberies in Virginia and Maryland, according to affidavits.
Walter Douglas and Floyd Davis are accused of smash and grab robberies from the Pentagon City Mall in Arlington, Va., the Chanel boutique in Neiman Marcus in Tysons Galleria Mall in McLean, the Gucci in the Bloomingdales at Tysons Corner Mall, the Michael Kors Limited in Tysons Galleria Mall, and the the Cartier Jewelry store in Chevy Chase, Md.
"On December 3, two people entered the Michael Kors store at Tysons Galleria Mall and stole handbags before fleeing in a gray, 4-door BMW. The affidavit shows that Davis owns a gray, 4-door BMW sedan, according to Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles, with distinct after-market wheels. Surveillance video shows a BMW with such wheels," according to the affidavit.
Walter Douglas has a long criminal history of robbery theft, grand theft and grand larceny in the area, according to an affidavit. Douglas is believe to be responsible for two jewelry robberies in Arlington County, Va., police said.
A witness said he was at Douglas' sister's apartment in February when he overheard Douglas and Floyd Davis talking about the merchandise and the crimes, police said.
The affidavit also shows that cell phone records were used to track their phones:
"Fairfax County Police Department received records of a Sprint cellular telephone registered to Floyd Davis, with the same date of birth and social security number as the Floyd Davis described throughout this affidavit. These cellular records included cell tower locations for the phone for December 3, 2012. According to the cellular records, the cellular telephone belonging to Floyd Davis was in the immediate area of Tysons Corner in McLean, Virginia
during the December 3, 2012 robbery. Additionally, Floyd Davis's phone was in telephonic contact with telephone number, [redacted] a phone number associated with DOUGLAS, numerous times on the days prior to and the morning of the robbery. DOUGLAS has previously provided his telephone number as [redacted] to law enforcement, and provided the number as his telephone number during a December 10, 2012 vehicle rental agreement."
