NEWINGTON, Va. (WUSA9) - Virginia State Police say one person is dead after a crash involving motorcycle and a tractor trailer on northbound Interstate 95 just before the Fairfax County Parkway.

The crash happened at approximately 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. The motorcyclist died in the collision, say state police. State Police later identified him as 68-year-old Timothy Halpin of Dumfries, Va.

Police say Halpin lost control while in the left lane and his motorcycle slid onto the left shoulder. Halpin slid into the center northbound lane, say police, and was hit by a tractor-trailer.

Police say the tractor-trailer failed to stop at the scene and witnesses were not able to describe it. Police  want anyone with information to call them at 703-803-0026.

At this point, police believe that alcohol was not a factor. They note that it was raining at the time of the crash.

All northbound lanes reopened to traffic at 6:45 a.m.
