WOODBRIDGE, Va. (WUSA9) -- A 14-year-old is charged with brandishing a weapon on school property and possession of a firearm or other weapon on school property after bringing an air-soft gun to school, say Prince William County Police.

According to police, officers responded to Godwin Middle School in woodbridge on Thursday shortly before 4 p.m. for the report of a person with a gun. They learned that the person was a student and was detained in the principal's office, say police. They also found out that it wasn't a real firearm, but an air-soft gun, according to police.

Authorities say that the student brought the air-soft gun to school and started playing with it outside while he was with a ground of friends. The 14-year-old student then fired it multiple times at the ground, accidentally hitting a friend in the leg, say police. The hit caused a minor mark, according to police.

A school empployee saw the incident but thought the gun was real and alerted other staff members, say police. The school was then placed on lockdown and police were called to the scene.

Police say the student was quickly identified and "the situation was quickly deescalated." No threat was made by the student before the incident say police.
