DANVILLE, Va. (AP) - NASCAR's president will be in attendance as Danville and Virginia honor a native son - pioneering race car driver Wendell O. Scott.

The occasion Friday will be the dedication of a state highway marker honoring the first African-American to win a race in what is now called NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series. Scott achieved that milestone 50 years ago.

NASCAR President Mike Helton will be among the speakers at a ceremony that will also include Scott's restored "No. 11" car. Danville Mayor Sherman Saunders will declare April 5th as "Wendell O. Scott Day."

Scott retired from the sport in 1973 after an injury suffered during a race at Talladega. He died in 1990.

Scott will also be honored at Martinsville Speedway this weekend.
