ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - About 350 people turned out in Arlington for what became a noisy forum on a proposed street car line.

Opponents say a bus system would do nearly the same job and be as much as $200 million cheaper than the proposed $250 million dollar line between Baileys Crossroads and Pentagon City.

County staff and four of the five elected county board members said the streetcar is needed along Columbia Pike because it can carry about twice as many passengers as a bus. And they noted that population estimates show 14,000 new apartments and condos will be built in the area in the next decade or two.

Others complained Columbia Pike recently went through renovation and the project would bring even more construction work to the area.
