DINWIDDIE, Va. (WUSA9) -- Virginia State Police mourn the death of a 35-year veteran of the Department, Master Trooper Junius Walker, who died in the line-of-duty on Thursday.

According to Police, Master Trooper Walker pulled up next to a black sedan that was stopped on the right shoulder of the southbound lanes of I-85 to check status of driver when shots were fired from the sedan at the officer.

Police say after Master Trooper Walker was shot, his patrol car ran off the road into the woods approximately 30 feet from the interstate.

A 911 call was placed by a nearby motorist, and troopers arrived on the scene soon after as they were three miles north of the incident assisting with a VDOT work zone, police say.

Police say when Virginia State Police arrived to the scene, one of the two troopers witnessed a man who they identified as Russell E. Brown, 28, of Chesterfield, Va., standing outside Master Trooper Walker's car with a gun.

Police and Brown exchanged gunfire before Brown fled on foot into the woods, and was later found a half mile away hiding at a local business, police say.

According to Police, the heat from Master Trooper Walker's engine sparked a fire in the woods, but not before the officer's pulled Master Trooper Walker out of the patrol car.

Police say Master Trooper Walker suffered from multiple gun shot wounds and died at the scene.

According to police, Russell E. Brown has been charged with one count of capital murder of a police officer, one count of
attempted capital murder of a police officer, and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Brown, is currently being held without bond at the Meherrin River Regional Jail in Alberta, Va., police say.

Police say Master Trooper Walker is survived by his wife and two adult daughters.
