ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA9) -- A 44-year-old man is lucky to be alive after lying down on metro tracks.

At about 9:40 p.m. on Monday, a train operator spotted a man on the tracks of the Orange Line at Ballston Metro Station and was able to stop before making significant contact with him, Metro officials said.

The  man suffered lacerations to his hands and was treated on the scene and was taken to can area hospital, officials said.

Delays are expected on the Orange Line between Ballston and East Falls Church because of the incident, officials said.
