FALLS CHURCH, Va. (WUSA) -- Jim Burch says the time has come, at long last, for America to stand up to the National Rifle Association and adopt meaningful gun control laws.

"We seem to honor the caliber of our weapons and not the caliber of our character," Burch said.

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of One Spirit, Burch led a small but passionate group of protestors outside NOVA Firearms in Falls Church, calling, for starters, for a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, in the bloody wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

"To allow these types of guns that have no other purpose than to murder, slaughter innocent people and children is just insane," Burch insisted.

Chuck Nesby completely disagrees, fearing the slippery slope towards a more comprehensive gun ban. The chief firearms instructor at NOVA Firearms, Nesby says, despite the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, he remains adamantly opposed to an assault weapons ban, saying law-abiding Americans should be allowed to carry virtually any gun they please.

"Why do we have to limit or restrict the sale of so-called assault rifles, or semi-automatic rifles," Nesby asked rhetorically.
