ANNANDALE, Va. (WUSA) -- Memories of the Virginia tech massacre five years ago came flooding back today for families of the victims.

The gunman killed himself, leaving 33 dead in the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Mary Read from Annandale was was of the victims.

"It hits you like ton or bricks because it goes right to your emotional core and brings back everything that you went through," said Peter Read, Mary's father.

He says you know there is a whole other community with families that are now going through what they went through."

" You desperately don't want to see it happen again and at the same you know every thing your tried to do in your own way did has not kept it from happening again. And that's very frustrating," said Read.

Read says the massacre makes him sad and angry. Angry, because nothings been done to help prevent them.

"It stands to reason that after we saw this when Congresswoman Gifford was shot, you don't want to have the kind of weapons available that allow killing on this scale," said Read.

A memorial for Mary Read is in a park about a half mile from the read home. But neither Mary's parents, nor any of the parents or families of the victims from Colorado, Arizona, and now Connecticut, need a memorial to remind them of their loss every day.

"Your life changes forever," said Read.

He says to move forward, you must find a way to honor the loss of someone who was taken so senselessly.
