Gainesville Church Damaged By Fire; Cause Under Investigation

GAINESVILLE, Va. (WUSA) --  Prince William County Fire officials say there is extensive damage to a baptist church after a fire broke out early Friday morning.

At approximately 4:30 a.m., fire crews responded to the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church at 15008 Lee Highway for the report of a church on fire. Firefighters found flames shooting from the side, back and roof of the church. There was heavy smoke coming from the entire building.

They were able to extinguish the fire, but officials say there is extensive fire damage to the church. 

We are told there are no injuries. 

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire and determining the damage estimate. 

Prince William County police report that southbound Route 29 in Gainesville will be closed for an unknown time near Somerset Crossing Dr. for the fire investigation. Police say northbound Lee Highway is open but there are detours and drivers can expect delays.
