WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Thursday, the Smithsonian National Zoo announced that the panda cub is a girl.

Mother Mei Xiang was artificially inseminated twice, using sperm from Tian Tian and Gao Gao, the panda at the San Diego Zoo.  Officials say the father is Tian Tian from the National Zoo.

Mei Xiang gave birth to two cubs at Smithsonian's National Zoo on Aug. 24, but one was still born. Zoo scientists used two tests to confirm the sex of both cubs, officials said.

The stillborn cub was also a girl.  Officials say the cub technically belongs to the Chinese, who will decide what becomes of the body. The pandas were fraternal twins.

Zoo officials say the surviving female panda cub has passed the critical 10-day mark.

Brandie Smith with the National Zoo added, "The cub has a fat little belly. It's very active. It's very vocal. If it needs anything it definitely lets Mei Xian and the rest of us know... We're starting to see that it's a little bit fuzzy and it's got those great black and white markings that are coming in."

The cub still does not have a name. Zoo officials say the name will be decided in collaboration with Chinese colleagues.
