It's no secret that prices plunge at popular beach resorts after families head home for the start of school. Now vacation rental site Flipkey has done an analysis of just how much you can expect to save if you plan your beach vacation after Labor Day.

Renters will find the greatest price drops from August to September on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where the average daily lodging rate falls from $390 a night to $195, a 50% savings. Other popular resort areas that show similar autumn savings on vacation rentals include the Delaware shore (41% price drop), Florida Panhandle (33%), North Carolina, south of the Outer Banks (27%) and the Jersey Shore (26%). See the slideshow above for a sampling of rental options at each of these destinations.

In addition to saving a bundle, you'll also have a better beach vacation in September. Crowds have dissipated, and at least at the Atlantic beaches, water temperatures remain close to their yearly highs. Plus you won't have to wait for a table at your favorite restaurant, and some beach towns even suspend parking restrictions after high season ends. So what are you waiting for?
