WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A debate over drunk driving is beginning across the country. The National Transportation Safety Board is calling for lowering the legal blood alcohol limit. The current legal limit is .08 but the board wants it reduced to .05.

NTSB officials say alcohol begins to affect perception and visual functions at .05 and in 100 countries around the world, .05 is the standard.

The NTSB was responsible for getting the limit lowered from .10 to .08 in the 80's. but it took until 2004 for all 50 states to get on board. That's why the National Association of Governors says this new lower limit will be a hard sell.
