Twitter Shuts Down Fake Boston Marathon Account

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- When tragedy strikes, many on social media see an opportunity.

On Monday, Twitter suspended fake Boston Marathon account (@_BostonMarathon) that tweeted it would donate $1 to #BostonMarathon victims for every retweet.

The post got over 50,000 retweets and more than 800 people favorited it before it was shut down. The real Boston Marathon account is @BostonMarathon.

Several other accounts have been said to be fake. Twitter account (@HopeForBoston) posted a photo that claimed to be of a young girl that was killed while running in the marathon and got over 64,000 retweets.

However, on the official 2013 Boston Marathon website states that participants must be 18 years of age or older.

Shortly, after @HopeForBoston tweeted another fake photo of a boy running, claiming it was the eight-year-old killed in the bombing.
