NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WBIR) -- A Nashville couple is accused of routinely putting their 5-year-old child inside an oven as a form of punishment.
A grand jury indicted Lavelldo Washington, 34, and Corneisha Wilkerson, 23, this week with charges related to this case.
Police first began investigating the couple when their 2-month-old child was treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for a broken leg. Hospital staff said they found bruises on the child's legs.
Police later discovered that Washington would discipline the couple's 5-year-old by putting the child in an unheated oven.
Nashville Metro Police Cpt. Gordon Howey said that form of discipline was unacceptable.
"Certainly, I'm not an expert on child discipline, but most of the time, appropriate forms of discipline are those things that most folks would know," said Howey. "What if the child had been in the oven and somehow it had turned on?"
Officials have charged Washington and Wilkerson with aggravated child abuse and neglect. Washington has at least 29 arrests on his record and is a registered sex offender. The couple has three children, who are all now in state custody.
