WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- NASA has promised a wide-sweeping review of who has access, in the wake of Chinese National and NASA contractor Bo Jiang's arrest in Dulles Airport last weekend for allegedly holding NASA secrets.
Also, we're learning more about the Chinese girlfriend of 59-year-old Benjamin Bishop, who was arrested last Friday in Hawaii for allegedly funneling top secret info to her.
The girlfriend is reportedly not in custody. Apparently, the defense contractor met the then 25-year-old at a defense conference.
Few people know how to catch spies better then Michelle Van Cleave. She served as the top counterintelligence officer in the country from 2003 to 2006.
"How does such a young and attractive woman get a visa to come to a defense conference?" Van Cleave said. "Interesting, but then the technique is simply she goes around, she meets people, she finds someone who may be interested and they strike up a relationship, and the next thing you know you've got a full blown espionage case underway.
Van Cleave has seen it all before. In her lifetime, she's seen the technology behind our space shuttle stolen by Chinese spies. Add to that, the designs for our nuclear weapons. Now, over the past few days, Van Cleave reacts to the most recent two arrests, both with possible ties to Chinese espionage.
"My first thought is I'm delighted that we caught them. My second thought is of course this is the tip of the iceberg of the extensive Chinese operations against the United States. I don't know that people are aware to the extent that economy is growing on the backs of state-orchestrated theft."
Van Cleave says simply the Chinese want we have, from technology, to intellectual property to national security secrets. Then, there's the Chinese's growing cyber effort.
"We just don't have a good handle on how much is being pilfered through these intrusions into computer networks, stealing technology and information of value. It is just extraordinary. It's been called the greatest transfer of wealth in history."
Van Cleave says the reason why you should worry is that this country depends on it's economic health, and security. And that's exactly what Chinese spies are trying to take away.
