WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Pope Francis is the first pope from the Americas. Until Wednesday the native Argentinian was the archbishop of Buenos Aires, making him the first non-European pope of the modern era.

Former Ambassador to the Holy See, Thomas Melady and author & educator Dr. Margaret Melady shared their reactions to the news.
