WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- On the eve of the third anniversary of her husband's arrest in Cuba, Judy Gross was joined outside the Cuban diplomatic mission in northwest Washington by religious and political leaders, all calling for her husband's immediate release from prison.

Sixty-three-year-old Alan Gross is a Potomac resident who was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted in a Cuban court of trying to undermine the Cuban government. Cuban leaders claim Gross was working for U.S. intelligence agencies, a charge vigorously denied by Gross' supporters, who say Gross was in Cuba as a U.S. government contractor to bring cell phones and computers to the Cuban Jewish community.

According to Judy Gross, her husband has developed a growth on his right shoulder and has lost more than 100 pounds in prison, the result, she fears, of some type of cancer.  That's why she and her husband's many supporters are now calling on the Cuban government to release her husband on humanitarian grounds, and calling on the U.S. government to help make that happen.

"The U.S. government sent Alan to Cuba on a U.S. government project and it is therefore the duty of the U.S. government to bring Alan home," Judy Gross said.
