WASHINGTON (AP) - With about 1 million members of the military expected to become civilians over the next five years, First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden are calling on the private sector to step up its hiring of veterans.

The two say they're encouraged by recent progress in reducing the unemployment rate among the latest generation of veterans.

The jobless rate for those veterans who served after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks fell from 12.1 percent in 2011 to 9.9 percent last year. But the pair says in an op-ed in Fortune that more is needed, and they're asking business leaders to help.

The two are being joined by their husbands, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, at a White House event Tuesday focusing on veterans and jobs.
