WASHINGTON (AP) - A Senate committee has approved legislation that expands access to infertility treatment for disabled veterans.

The Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs cleared the bill Wednesday.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Patty Murray, would authorize the Department of Veterans Affairs to cover the cost of in vitro fertilization treatment for veterans and their spouses who need it.

Sen. Richard Burr, a North Carolina Republican, introduced but then withdrew an amendment that would bring the measure in line with Department of Defense policy. The department covers IVF for severely injured veterans but doesn't cover the cost of third-party donors or surrogates.
