FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA) -- DC-area radio legend Mike O'Meara is calling all bikers to take part in a unique fundraising event this weekend for The Fisher House organization.
He will lead the annual Poker Run ride through Northern Virginia to raise funds. Last year's event brought in $10,000. O'Meara tells 9NEWS NOW he hopes to bring in more money this year. "We're hoping this will be the biggest one ever," he said Wednesday morning.
The event begins Saturday at Patriot Harley-Davidson in Fairfax, Va. You can register between 8:00am and 10:00am Saturday for $20.
O'Meara explained how the event works: "Each rider gets a poker hand: you get cards at the beginning, two stops in between, and then your last poker card at the end." The event ends at Jimmy's Old Town Tavern in Herndon, Va. "The winning hand gets a fabulous cash prize."
All of the money goes to Fisher House. The group provides housing and pays for other expenses of the families of wounded warriors as they recuperate and rehabilitate from their injuries. The organization's website says it is a public-private partnership which "recognizes the special sacrifices of our men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs."
Besides helping out, you'll have a good time. "It's a lot of fun," O'Meara said. "We have so much fun with this."
