GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County Police have released the name of a man who died Friday after officers deployed their TASERs on him.
Monday, police say 51-year-old Anthony Howard died following a bizarre series of events.
Someone called 9-1-1 at approximately 6:10 p.m. Friday to report that man was standing in a parked pick-up truck, yelling profanities, hitting the truck with rocks, and crawling on other vehicles in the 8800 block of Cross Country Place in Gaithersburg.
When an officer arrived, he found the man in the bed of the pick-up truck. the man then jumped to the roof of an SUV next to the truck, say police. The officer then told the man to get down, and he did so, but police say he "continued to act agressively and strangely." The officer told the man to stop but he didn't, so the officer used his pepper spray, according to police.
The man then ran to a nearby sidewalk and picked up and dropped a potted plant and then a landscaping rock, say police. Next, the man picked up a child's scooter and struck the front door of a house with it, according to police.
Other officers showed up and told the man to leave the front of the house, say police, but the man refused. Two officers then used their TASERs on him, according to police. Police say the other officers put handcuffs on the man but then realized he was not breathing. They called fire/emergency crews for assistance and then started CPR, according to police.
The man, later identified as Howard, was taken to Shady Grove Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
The five officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave, according to protocal say police.
