HANOVER, Md. (WUSA9) -- Minutes after midnight, Maryland Live! casino in Hanover opened 122 live action table games to the public that set off a big celebration Wednesday night.
Maryland Live! is the largest casino in the state. You could play a slot machine, but you couldn't roll the dice or ask the dealer for another card until Thursday. Five months ago voters approved table games in a statewide referendum.
Someone who was inside Maryland Live! long before midnight is Kayla Baker. She is one of the 500 new dealers trained at the Maryland Live! school.
For Baker, this is an interesting career change. "I have my degree in biochemistry. I've been working in a lab and I decided to make a change and come on over and try this out," shared Baker.
Baker said that she had never gambled before. "I never played any of the games, didn't do any of the slots. It was definitely a challenge, but class was great," stated Baker.
Baker ran a blackjack table early this morning. "We've had a full table since midnight. People lined up before midnight hoping to get a chair. It's definitely been a busy, busy night. Lots of winners. It's been good," according to Baker.
As far as how people are feeling about the place, Baker said, "We're getting great feedback. Everyone is having a really good time. They're happy the table games are here and they're excited to play."
Many people are waiting for the poker room -- 50 or 60 new tables will be added this summer when it opens up.
