ANNAPOLIS (WUSA9) -- The Maryland Senate gave final approval to the State's most comprehensive gun control law in two decades - just days before the end of their legislative session.

Under the bill, which the Governor is expected to sign after the General Assembly adjourns Monday, magazines are limited to 10 rounds.  The measure also bans 45 different assault style weapons, however those who currently own the guns or buy them before October 1st - when the law will likely take effect - are exempt.  Gun buyers will also be subject to stricter licensing and training. Their fingerprints must also be submitted to the State Police.  Currently only 5 other state have similar requirements: Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Hawaii.

The law would also ban anyone who voluntarily commits themselves into a mental health facility from purchasing a firearm.

Opponents vow to bring the issue to the voters.  If they succeed in getting a referendum vote on the gun control measure, the law could be stalled by a full year.
