Gaithersburg Man Dies Behind Wheel

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA9) -- A man last seen going out for groceries was killed when his car ran into a tree.

According to authorities, about 1 a.m. Sunday, an off-duty police employee alerted colleagues about a gray pick-up truck being driven erratically. An officer located the car on Route 108 and Hawkins Creamery Rd. but before he could get the driver to stop, the car went left and struck a tree.

The collision was deadly. The driver is identified as Jose A. Ayala, 49, of Gaithersburg. Family members told police he was diabetic and insulin dependent. 

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
