LANHAM, Md. (WUSA) -- Thursday night, a family was displaced and a firefighter was burned after a fire at a house in Lanham.

Firefighters arrived at the home in the 8900 block of Hickory Hill Avenue at 9:30 p.m. to see both floors of the house were on fire. They fought the fire for about 15 minutes before deciding to call for extra firefighters. Shortly after 10 p.m., the fire was extinguished.

But before firefighters got there, thirteen year old Taji Lee saved his family from the flames. The teen got his sister out first before running back inside the burning home for his disabled mother.

"I had to kind of pick her up fireman-style and carry her out of the house," Taji told 9 News.

He then ran across the street and called 911.

His mother Karen Lee, who suffers from multiple slcerosis said: "My son had the courage to pull me out and lock the door. I just thank God."

A firefighter, however, was injured. He received first and second degree burns to his upper body and was transported to a burn unit. Thursday night, he was reported to be in fair condition.

The fire appears to be accidental but investigators are still working to identify the exact cause of the fire.

The Red Cross is helping the family, which hopes to rebuild and return to the home one day.
