WOODBINE, Md. (WUSA) - The woman who was shot in the head by her boyfriend on Sunday died this morning, according to Maryland State Police.

Brittany A. Warfield, 21, was pronounced dead around 9 a.m. Monday morning at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said.

Police say her boyfriend 26-year-old William R. Brueckmann now faces first degree murder, second degree murder and manslaughter. After his arrest on Sunday, Breuckmann was initially charged with attempted first degree murder, attempted second degree murder, first degree assault, second degree assault and use of a handgun in the commission of a felony.

The incident took place Sunday morning at the 6800 block of John Pickett Rd. in Woodbine, where the couple lived, after neighbors reported hearing a gunshot in the area to police.

"When state troopers and deputies arrived at the address, Brueckmann was found in the backyard of the residence holding Warfield, who was lying on the ground," Maryland State Police said in a news release.

Warfield was immediately flown to the shock trauma center after police observed what appeared to be a gunshot wound to her head. Preliminary investigations indicate that the couple began arguing which later resulted in the shooting - Brueckmann was planning on moving out of the apartment, police said.

State Police obtained a warrant and recovered the handgun that was used in the shooting inside the home and several other long guns Sunday night.
