(AP) -- The longtime former drummer of the band Devo, best known for the 1980 song "Whip It," has died after a battle with brain cancer. He was 58.
Alan Myers died Monday in Los Angeles, where he lived. Devo spokesman Michael Pilmer confirmed the death Wednesday.
Myers was the band's drummer from 1976 to 1985, during Devo's heyday.
Fellow band member and bassist Gerald Casale told The Associated Press that he's never worked with a better drummer and called Myers "the human metronome," after the time-marking instrument.
Devo was formed in Akron, Ohio, in the early 1970s by Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh. Myers came aboard early on, long before the group became an MTV staple.
Devo is short for devolution, the idea that man was devolving into its monkey state.
