BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Virginia Tech has received a nearly $1 million research grant from the National Science Foundation.

The Blacksburg school says the three-year, $999,531 award will be used to increase the efficiency of laboratory processes that make custom DNA molecules using industrial engineering.

The Roanoke Times reports that the project provides cross-training opportunities to biology and engineering students by fabricating DNA naturally and synthetically to make larger DNA molecules that correspond to computer-designed sequences.

The Creative Research Awards for Transformative Interdisciplinary Ventures grants are awarded to projects that help break disciplinary boundaries that may occur within the National Science Foundation.
